The president, Abdul Hamid, on Friday directed the authorities concerned to speedily complete the work on Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover to relieve the city dwellers of severe traffic jam due to the construction work. ‘I requested them (authorities) to complete the work by this month and open it to transport,’ the president told journalists standing on the under-construction flyover while inspecting it.
The objective of the 11-km flyover project is to reduce traffic congestion in the southern part of the capital and establish improved and faster road connectivity with 30 districts through the major gateway of capital.
During the visit, the president underscored the need for repairing roads beneath the flyover which were badly damaged for the construction of the flyover.
Abdul Hamid expressed the hope that after the opening of the project as well as overhauling of the rundown roads under the flyover, the traffic jam of the capital would be reduced to a great extent.
Talking about the objective of his visit, the president said, ‘I’ve been here to see for myself the progress of work as the project site is near Bangabhaban…. I’m not only the president but also a citizen of the country. As a citizen, I have the right … and have also interest to know about the project,’ he said.
The president inspected the whole project site on his vehicle through the road under the new flyover from Gulistan to Jatrabari.
He got down from his vehicle at both points of the flyover-Kutubkhali in Jatrabari and Gulistan.
Local government division secretary Abu Alam M Shaheed Khan, project director Ashiqur Rahman and chairman of Orion Group Obaidul Karim briefed the president on various features of the flyover.
Obaidul Karim apprised the president that they would be able to complete the work by September 23.
Orion Infrastructure Ltd, an arm of Orion Group, has been implementing the flyover project under the supervision of Dhaka South City Corporation.
