Political parties, rights and cultural organisations and personalities on Wednesday continued to vent their condemnation of the arson attacks
on Buddhist monasteries at Ramu in Cox’s Bazar and Patiya in Chittagong.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus in a statement condemned the attacks and expressed his concern over the incident.
‘I cannot think that people of my country can show such abominable attitude towards their neighbours. I believe that proper investigation of the incidents will be carried out and perpetrators will be punished,’ Yunus said.
He urged the countrymen to unite against all communal ill forces.
Workers Party of Bangladesh, Ganatantri Party, Samyabadi Dal, Gana Azadi League, Communist Kendra and Gana Oikya Committee, Parbatya Chattagram Janasanghati Samiti, Samajik Andolan, Adivasi Forum and Adivasi Odhikar Forum held a joint rally in front the National Press Club, protesting at the attacks on places of worship.
Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon, while addressing the rally, called on the people to unite against such attacks.
Chaired by president of Gana Azadi League president Abdus Samad, the rally was addressed, among others, by politicians Pankaj Bhattachrya, Abu Haamed Sahbuddin, Quamrul Ahsan, rights activists Shaktipada Tripura, Sanjib Drong and Dhaka University teacher Mesbah Kamal.
The Democratic Left Alliance, a combine of left leaning political parties, formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club.
Coordinator of the alliance Zonayed Saki at human chain said the government was trying to hide the perpetrators and demanded immediate arrest of the attackers and their exemplary punishment.
The Communist Party of Bangladesh and the Socialist Party of Bangladesh jointly formed a human chain.
Jatiya Samjtantrik Dal faction, led by ASM Abdur Rob, World Peace Council and cultural organisations Udichi Shilpi Goshthi and Samageet also held separate rallies at the same venue, protesting at the attacks.
New Age Sylhet correspondent reported that teachers, students and cultural activists of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on Wednesday formed a human chain on the campus to protest at the attacks on Buddhist temples and houses in Cox’s Bazar.
New Age correspondent in Barisal reported that socio-cultural-political activists at rallies and demonstrations on Wednesday condemned the sectarian violence.
