The construction of Bahaddarhat Flyover Flyover by Chittagong Development Authority began on Saturday with breaking the ground at the Bahhaderhat crossing.
CDA engineers said that the flyover would be completed by 2012.
Speaking as the chief guest, ruling Awami League lawmaker Afsarul Amin said, ‘We want to work for the development of Chittagong.’
He called upon all to resist hartals.
He said that it was quite absurd to call hartals to protect a war criminal.
He said that the people of Chittagong were deeply suspicious about whether or not the construction of the flyover would be completed because none of the eight projects inaugurated by former prime minister Khaleda Zia in a single day was implemented during her tenure.
CDA, said engineers, had plans to build five flyovers at convenient locations.
CDA chairman Abdus Salam chaired the groundbreaking ceremony.
CDA chief engineer Iqbal Hussein Majumder explained the facts and figures of the project and said that the flyover was planned to ease traffic congestion in and around the port city.
Salam said that ever since he joined the CDA as the chairman he had been working for the development of Chittagong.
He described development as an on-going process.
He said, ‘We want politics of development and that he would himself to it.’
He thanked the prime minister for keeping her promise.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police commissioner Abul Kashem requested the concerned authorities to involve CMP in all development activities of the city.
