Bangla-desh eves opened their Asian Games cricket campaign with a crushing 10-wicket victory over Hong Kong in a Group B match at the Guanggong International Cricket Stadium in Guangzhou on Sunday.
Chess was the only other sport that gave Bangladesh some kind of success on the second day of the meet.
Opting to bat first, Hong Kong women’s team saw seven of their batters fall victim to run-outs with opener KK Gill making highest 11 in their total of 25 runs, believed to be the lowest total for a women’s Twenty20 match. The remaining three wickets were taken by Chameli Khatun (two for four runs) and Tithi Sarkar, who also gave away the same number of runs.
Later it was a cakewalk for Bangladesh openers Rumana Ahmed and Farzan Haque, who scored 26 in 3.4 overs. Farzan scored run-a-ball 17 while Rumana was unbeaten on 1.
According to International Cricket Council statistics, the lowest total in international women’s Twenty20 cricket was Pakistan’s 60 against England at Taunton in the 2009 World Championship.
Thailand were dismissed for 49 in their eight-wicket loss to Pakistan in a Group A match in the day’s other match.
Bangladesh face Japan in their second Group B match today.
Bangladesh chess players GM Niaz Murshed, FM Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar and WFM Shamima Akhter Liza and Sharmin Sultana Shirin registered victories in the Asian Games individual events.
All the players had to play two rounds of chess on Sunday and Niaz won the 4th round duel against Al Safari of Iraq. However, Niaz lost to another Iraqi player IM Ares Nasim in the 3rd round.
Sagar, who lost to Indonesian GM Sushantha in the 3rd round, bounced back to winning ways in the 4th round defeating Lee Sun of Korea.
Liza defeated Sushmita Adhikari of Nepal in the 3rd round and was undefeated on the day after she held Turkmenistan GM Mack Rick to a draw in the 4th round.
Shirin defeated Bushra of Jordan in the 4th round but lost to her Mongolian opponent in the earlier round.
Taif Qader of Bangladesh reached the quarter-finals of the 8-Ball Pool Singles but lost to Ku Pu Cheng of Chinese Taipei by 7-1 frame and failed to make the last four.
Taif earlier beat his Kuwaiti opponent by 7-6 frame to book a last eight slot.
Nadimul Islam and Iqbal Hossain, the two Bangladeshi shooters competing in the 10 metre Air Pistol, scored 557 and 555 to be placed 42nd and 44th among 50 participants.
The female shooters of the same event Armin Asha and Farhana Kawser totalled 369 and 356 to finish 36th and 51st among 52 shooters.
Eti Islam lost to Lee Jung Hi of Korea in the Sanshu U-52kg event of Wushu.
Kamal Hossain of Bangladesh clocked 31.16 seconds to finish 25th among 35 swimmers in 50 metre breaststroke.
Bangladesh hockey team start their campaign in the Asian Games against Japan today. The swimmers, shooters and the chess players will also compete in their respective events.
