After Awami League-led grand alliance came to the power, the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Rajshahi University unit have involved themselves in criminal activities like toll collection and kidnapping on the campus
Many teachers and general students of the university expressed concern at such illegal activities of the BCL men.
Some BCL leaders, residing at different dormitories have also exerted their influence on the general students and halls administration.
Many shop owners on the campus have alleged the BCL activists collect toll from them regularly and commit crimes on the campus exercising their political influence.
Sources said, some BCL activists, who are not students of the university, are also involved in kidnapping and snatching on the campus.
Earlier on January 22, a group of BCL activists picked up an admission seeker from the campus, took him to a nearby students’ mess and snatched Tk 5,000 from him.
‘After six hours’ confinement, the BCL activists released me’, the victim, Yasin Arafat, told newsman on the campus.
On January 21, a group of BCL men collected Tk 500 in toll from each shops at stadium market on the campus.
On January 16, some BCL cadres beat up two journalists in front of the folklore department during their professional duties.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and some left-leaning student organisations have criticised the role of police administration and the university authorities, saying that they are patronising the unruly BCL men.
They also alleged that police are yet to take any legal action against the BCL men involved in criminal activities.
When contacted, BCL RU unit president Ibrahim Hossain Moon said they will take actions against the BCL men involved in criminal acts.
Jahangir Hossain, assistant commissioner of police Motiher zone, said,”We will investigate the allegations against BCL actvists before taking any legal action.”
