Some 11,000 children took admission tests for class V and VI at eight government schools amid a tough contest in Chittagong city yesterday.
Thousands of people accompanying the admission aspirants contributed to a long tailback in the city choking up the thoroughfare when the exams were going on.
Hasmat Jahan, the headmistress of Dr Khastagir Govt Girls School, said 1,968 children are competing against 240 seats in her school this year.
There are only 120 seats for class six in Muslim High School, for which 1,497 children are contesting, said the school’s headmaster, SM Ziaul Haider Henry.
Taslima Khanam, a guardian of a child who sat admission test at Chittagong Govt High School, said, “I do not know what will happen. The applicants are about tenfold the number of seats.”
