The Editors and owners of newspapers of Chittagong have demanded zero tariff on import of newsprint for undisrupted publication of newspapers in the country.
They made the demand at a meeting with the Information Minister, Hasanul Haque Inu at Chittagong Circuit House during his visit in Chittagong today. Editor of Daily Azadi M A Malek, Editor of Daily Purbokone Taslim Uddin Chowdhury, Editor of Daily Shuprobhat Bangladesh Rushu Mahamud, Editor of Daily Bir Chattagram Monch Sayed Omar Faruk met with Information Minister and said that the budget proposals for the current fiscal increased the tax on import of newsprint which would hamper the publication of newspapers in the country as the cost of publication would increase. They urged the government through the Information Minister to make zero tax for importing newsprint.
Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu assured the editors of Chittagong that he would discuss the matter with the Prime Minister. He said, “the present government is a media and newspaper friendly government which believes in freedom of press and newspapers. So, we will do everything for development of newspapers and media.”
Mainuddin Khan Badol MP was also present at the meeting.
