Dalit leaders on Monday demanded formulation of an act to end all kinds of discrimination against them in society. At a discussion on ‘duties to improve education, employment, housing, water and sanitation facilities for Dalits’, experts said though they contribute a lot, they are still deprived of their rights. Bangladesh Dalit and Excluded Rights Movement and Nagarik Udyog organised the discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity of the capital.
Columnist Syed Abul Maksud said in election manifestos all political parties need to make specific commitment for Dalit community.
He said that if Dalit enforces strike in the capital for one day, the city would be unlivable.
Though Dalits are contributing to daily life, they are deprived of the basic rights including education, health, housing, water and sanitation.
Abul Maksud urged the government to take initiative to formulate a law to end such discrimination.
Communist Party Bangladesh leader Ruhin Hossain Prince said the people of Bangladesh fought for independence and to end discrimination 42 years ago but the discrimination still exists.
BDERM coordinator ABM Anisuzzaman and women cell president Moni Rani Das also spoke at the discussion.
