The Danish minister for climate and energy, Connie Hedegaard is arriving in Dhaka today on a three-day visit to get the first-hand impression of climate change vulnerability of Bangladesh’s coastal belt and hold talks with the officials.
Foreign ministry officials said that the Danish minister was likely to meet the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina and hold talks with the state minister for environment and forests, Mostafizar Rahman Fizar and the state minister for foreign affairs, Hasan Mahmud.
She will discuss with the Bangladesh leaders the global climate change challenges and Bangladesh’s preparation for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) to be held in Copenhagen in December. Connie Hedegaard is also scheduled to open a conference on the climate change issues styled ‘Bangladesh on the Road to Copenhagen’.
According to the tentative schedule, the Danish minister will make a trip on February 3 to the Southern coastal areas of the country and meet the local communities who are affected by the effects of climate change such as floods, salinity intrusion, storm surges and tropical cyclones.
Communities in these areas are trying to cope with the climate change by constructing dikes, improving water supply and sanitation facilities, changing cropping patterns, and building protected storage houses.
She is scheduled to leave the capital on February 4.
