Expressing grave concern and frustration over the suspension of the Generalised System of Preferences facilities for Bangladeshi products in the US market,
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday urged the world’s biggest economy to revive the benefits. In a statement, the DCCI said that the US suspension of GSP facility or duty-free trade privilege for Bangladeshi products came like a bolt from the blue when the government was taking various positive steps to ensure compliance in the garment factories.
The suspension will have a long-term impact on Bangladesh’s export to the USA, DCCI said, adding that it would also put a negative impact on Bangladesh’s economy.
‘But since the US did not cancel the facility,
Bangladesh has still hopes of regaining the status by ensuring better labour
rights and workers’ safety,’ it said.
The government and the private sector would work relentlessly to this end, it said.
The DCCI also called on the government to include representatives from trade bodies, industrialists, exporters and other stakeholders in the ministerial committee formed to ensure compliance in factories to regain the GSP benefits.
It also urged the ministerial committee and all concerned to work swiftly to ensure a congenial environment so that GSP facilities could be revived within the next six months.
