The driver of the ambulance that caught fire after hitting a flyover railing at Maligram under Bhanga upazila in Faridpur on Saturday morning, killing all seven passengers, died in Dhaka in the afternoon.
As a result, the death toll in the accident has risen to eight.
Faridpur superintendent of police Md Shahjahan told New Age that the driver Mridul Malo died at about 5:00pm at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
A probe committee was formed by the Faridpur district administration to probe into the road crash.
The seven passengers were from the same family.
Faridpur deputy commissioner Md Quamrul Ahsan Talukder told New Age that the driver lost control over the steering after one of its wheels burst and then the vehicle hit the railing of the flyover.
Following the clash, fire originated in the engine and then the cylinder blasted, he said.
‘We formed a six-member committee headed by an additional deputy commissioner to probe into the incident,’ he said and added that they had given Tk 20,000 for every deceased person and Tk 10,000 to the injured driver.
No case was filed yet, he said at 5:30pm.
Following the incident, vehicular movement on the expressway was disrupted for some time.
The ambulance, Dhaka metro CAA 71-4707, has updated fitness certificate, confirmed officials of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority.
