Contestants in a parliamentary debate yesterday stressed moral education to prevent stalking instead of enforcement of laws
The debate was on “Laws alone will not prevent stalking, ethical education is necessary”, participated by 32 universities of the country.
Dhaka University (DU) won the contest titled Cambrian University Campus Parliament over Rajshahi University (RU). Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid inaugurated the debate session.
DU participants said enforcing laws may reduce the magnitude of stalking for short-term, but ethical education is necessary for permanent prevention of the vice.
RU students argued it is not clear who will be given ethical education and how it will be given to people. If laws can be enforced properly, stalking will be eradicated from the society.
Jahangirnagar University, in another debate the same day, won over East West University on the topic, ”War crime tribunal is not a tool of political revenge, rather a demand of time”.
Earlier, the education minister said, “The new generation will have to take the responsibility of the future. This kind of debate will help create leadership among the youth.” Hasan Ahmed Choudhury Kiran, chairman of Debate for Democracy, moderated the programme.
