Dhaka Mayor Sadeque Hossain exchanged views with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president AHM Mustafa Kamal on the progress of work which the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has taken up in collaboration with the BCB at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNS) in Mirpur yesterday.
The renovation and repair of streets and upgradation of drainage system, which the Army is overlooking with support from the DCC, will be completed by February 5 and after that the city beautification work will start, the mayor informed reporters after the meeting.
In the last phase of the beautification work, two days before the opening ceremony on February 17, the 22-km long streets between Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS), where the ceremony will be held, and between BNS and SBNS will be decorated with lights and flowers.
The mayor also announ-ced that the beautification work will give a new look to the city like never before and he also reasoned the decision of holding back the final beautification work till the last week before the start of the World Cup:
“The beautification work will be much better and more colourful than anything held here before like the SA Games or the SAARC Summits. We are deferring the floral beautification because of perishable nature of those materials.”
Apart from these, the main city streets and areas where the cricketers and tourists will stay or go, will be kept neat and tidy while the Ministry of Social Welfare will be ensuring that beggars are kept in vagrant centres and are provided daily subsidies.
