Delhi pledges to help nab 2 fugitives
Two condemned killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman — Moslehuddin Khan and Abdul Mazed — might be hiding in India, and Delhi has assured Dhaka of making all efforts to apprehend and hand them over to it.
“Of the six absconding (killers of Bangabandhu) it is possible that the two might be in India,” Indian Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said in Dhaka yesterday.
“I have assured my counterpart [Bangladesh home minister] that once we have information or intelligence, no effort or resource will be spared to apprehend and hand them over,” he told a joint press briefing at the end of his visit to Bangladesh.
The Supreme Court on November 19, 2009, confirmed the death sentence of 12 self-confessed killers of Bangabandhu. Of them, five were executed on January 28 last year and one– Abdul Aziz Pasha– died in Zimbabwe in June, 2001.
Six others –Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haque Dalim, SHMB Nur Chowdhury, AM Rashed Chowdhury, Moslehuddin and Abdul Mazed — are still at large.
Bangladesh home ministry officials said Moslehuddin and Abdul Mazed are hiding in this region, and sometimes may take refuge in India. But they do not have any specific information about it.
Dhaka has provided Delhi profiles with photographs of the two fugitives, but Delhi has asked for more information to track them down.
“We have given their photographs taken 40 years ago, and we don’t have any biometric data which include finger print, hand-print and voice recognition. We are trying to collect those,” Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder told The Daily Star yesterday.
In reply to a question, he said the fugitives are changing their hideouts frequently to evade arrest.
Four of the convicts are thought to be hiding in western countries.
