The first solo watercolour painting exhibition, titled ‘Life in Varendra’, by artist Suman Kumar Sarkar started at La Galerie in
Alliance Française de Dhaka on Tuesday.
The artist’s intimacy with nature has started since his childhood. It has further intensified in course of time as he found himself fascinated and trapped within the magical net of Varendra land.
The beauty of nature and the simple lifestyle of human inhabitants there have heavily influenced his emotions. He tries to portray his emotions in his paintings with the perception of a simple and slow walking passerby.
The artist has tried to illustrate the life-struggle of the Bengalis and tribal Santal inhabitants of Varendra land, in the Northwest region of the country, in his artworks displayed in the ongoing exhibition.
‘Life of Varendra people is so simple. They still follow the primitive style of living which attracted me’, Sarkar said.
To describe Varendra people’s lifestyle, the artist sighted an example from his interaction with a local inhabitant of the area. ‘I found a colour television set on an open space of a house. When I asked the owner, don’t you fear your TV may get stolen? The owner replied, “why should one still it?” So the idea of stealing isn’t familiar for them!’
Eminent artist Rafiqun Nabi inaugurated the exhibition on Tuesday. The show will remain open to all from 3.00pm to 9.00pm on working days and 9.00am to 12.00pm on weekends till April 29.
