Dhaka needs $10b for adaptation
Bangladesh needs US $10 billion for mitigation and adaptation to climate changes in the next five to 10 years, said Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, co-ordinator of the National Climate Change Negotiation Committee, yesterday.
Government needs six more months to complete sector-wise assessment to know the amount required, he said.
He was presenting a keynote paper at a seminar titled ‘The outcome of Cancun Climate Change Conference (COP-16) and Bangladesh’, organised by Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) at its office in the city.
Terming the COP-16 partially successful, he said, “We categorically demanded financial and technical support from developed countries, as they are responsible for global warming,” he said.
Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan identified six areas to address challenges of climate change including food security, comprehensive disaster management, low carbon management and institutional strengthening.
BEA President Prof Abul Barkat chaired the seminar.
