A pair of new commuters’ train will ply Dhaka-Narayanganj route from Saturday to ease regular transport crisis of city dwellers.
Communications minister Syed Abul Hossain is scheduled to inaugurate the service at Kamalapur Railway Station, according to sources in Bangladesh Railway.
BR director general TA Chowdhury said the railway authorities had decided to launch new services as rehabilitation of the route had been completed.
After completion of the work, he said, the travel time between Dhaka and Narayanganj would be reduced to 40 minutes from one hour. About 20,000 people travel in this route everyday, he said.
BR sources said the new Narayanganj-bound train will leave Kamalapur station at 12:00noon and reach the destination at 12:45pm and Dhaka-bound train will leave Narayanganj at 12:25pm and arrive at Kamalapur at 1:05pm everyday.
BR chief engineer (track) Liakat Ali said Tk 46 crore was spent for rehabilitation of the rail route.
He said under the rehabilitation works Narayanganj, Chashara, Fatullah and Gandaria stations were refurbished along with improving signalling system and level crossing.
The commuter train service has been introduced as the communication ministry is now making stride to ease traffic congestion in the capital encouraging people to use train and water routes to reduce pressure on public buses.
