Dhaka stocks ended flat on Sunday after a three-day fall with turnover hitting two-month low due to thin turnout of investors amid political tension.
The turnover of Dhaka Stock Exchange declined to Tk 264.30 crore from Tk 367.56 crore in the previous trading session. Sunday’s turnover was the lowest since October 27 this year when turnover was Tk 249.90 crore.
Market operators said brokerage houses and merchant banks saw thin turnout of investors on the day amid intense political tension centring an opposition alliance’s programme.
Most of the trading houses remained nearly empty due to unavailability of public transports in the city, they said.
The market finished the day in the positive territory despite a start on a negative note as some institutional investors became active on the trading floor in late trading to avail lower prices of shares, they said.
The benchmark general index of bourse, DSEX, closed at 4,209.69 points on Sunday, adding 0.20 per cent or 8.73 points.
DS30, the blue-chip index of the DSE, advanced by 0.16 per cent, or 2.33 points, to finish at 1,450.28 points.
The DSEX and the DS30 had lost 87.90 points and 32.92 points respectively in the previous three trading sessions.
‘While the nation gave in to deep fear of chaos, the market responded with a puzzling session,’ IDLC Investments said in its daily market commentary.
The indices ended flat on Sunday, while turnover plunged 28 per cent as most of the investors adopted wait and see approach, it said.
‘On the other hand, combined effect of natural correction and negative outlook valued textile to red for another session,’ IDLC also said.
Golden Son led the turnover leaders with its shares worth Tk 15.98 crore changing hands.
Argon Denims, RN Spinning Mills, Bay Leasing and Investment, National Life Insurance, Generation Next Fashions, Lankabangla Finance, Peoples Leasing and Financial Services and Delta Life Insurance were also among the other top turnover leaders.
