Dhaka stocks finished lower on Sunday amid thin participation of investors as the bourse returned to trading after a nine-day closure, market operators said.
The Dhaka Stock Exchange remained closed from December 5 to 13 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha and the weekly holidays.
The DSE general index lost 7.77 points, or 0.31 per cent, to close at 2536.90, while its blue chips index, DSE20, shed 18.74 points, or 0.88 per cent, to finish at 2112.93.
A DSE stockbroker said the market remained dull with sellers dominating the day’s trading amid a downtrend in share prices for more than two months.
Of the total 204 issues traded, 43 advanced, 154 declined and seven remained unchanged.
Starting with an upbeat mood, the DSE benchmark index went into the negative territory in the last hour of the day’s trading.
The stockbroker said the market also witnessed low turnout of investors after the vacation, resulting in lower share transactions.
Turnover at the DSE dropped to Tk 133.80 crore, the lowest (except that on July 9) since February 24, when it was Tk 116.24 crore.
On July 9 the DSE posted a Tk 130.93-crore turnover as virus attacks on servers and computers of majority of the brokerage firms hampered share trading at the bourse. That day the bourse remained active for around one hour only and so is not considered a normal trading day.
On December 4, the last trading day before the nine-day vacation, DSE turnover was Tk 207.25 crore.
On Sunday, Titas Gas topped the turnover leaders with a total transaction of Tk 14.87 crore.
Summit Power, ACI Formulations, Beximco, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, Uttara Bank, Shinepukur Ceramics, Grameen Two Mutual Fund, ACI, and Summit Alliance Port were the rest of the day’s top 10 turnover leaders.
Chittagong stocks also dropped on Sunday as the port city bourse resumed trading after the nine-day holiday.
The selective categories index of Chittagong Stock Exchange lost 19.34 points, or 0.38 per cent, to close at 5111.98, while its blue chips index, CSE30, shed 57.81 points, or 0.83 per cent, to finish at 6888.74.
Of the total 101 issues traded on the CSE floor, 23 posted gain, 76 dropped and two remained unchanged.
Turnover at the CSE declined to Tk 18.17 crore from Tk 29.57 crore on December 4.
