Dhaka Theatre has come up with an innovative programme to promote young theatre practitioners of the troupe as theatre directors. As part of the programme, four activists of the troupe named Rubayet Ahmed, Esha Yousuf, Wasim Ahmed and Samiun Jahan Dola will direct iconic playwright Al Deen’s plays titled Iti Potromita, Golpo Niye Golpo, Amrita Upakkhyan and Usha Utsab respectively. The directors are working on the plays, said the troupe members.
On Saturday, the press show of Iti Potromita was staged at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Al Deen wrote Iti Potromita as a teleplay in the 1970s which became popular as comedy of errors. ‘He wrote many comic teleplays from which I selected this one to adapt in theatre,’ said director Rubayet Ahmed adding that Muntasir was the only available Al Deen comedy for stage.
Iti Potromita is a comic entanglement over what happens when three young pen friends- two males and a female- meet for the first time. For adaptation Rubayet incorporated some elements from the traditional shong and the European Comedia dell’arte. His fusion made the production enjoyable.
Senior members of the troupe including Nasiruddin Yousuff and Shimul Yousuf evaluated the performance saying some artistes took indecisive pauses and made mistakes in movements.
Rafiqul Islam, Sumon Ibrahim and Fahmida Kamal Ripa enacted the major roles in the play.
