A theft case filed by his former team allegedly for harassing him forced the country’s top cyclist Tarqiul Islam to skip his favourite event 40km road race in the eight Bangladesh Games on Thursday.
Tariqul, the winner of five gold medals in the last five national championships, who joined Bangladesh Ansar from BJMC recently, alleged that his former team implicated him in a false theft case to prevent him from participating in the Games.
BJMC officials said Tariqul stole a bicycle from their possession and therefore they filed the case with the Demra police station against him. The case has nothing to do with the Games, they claimed.
In the absence of Tariqul, Azizur Rahman of Dhaka won the gold medal in the event. Tariqul, however, secured bail on Thursday and was expecting to participate in other events in the next two days.
