Speakers in a programme in Sylhet on Sunday stressed the need for social forestation for preserving ecological balance. They said more forestation was needed to maintain ecological balance and mitigate the adverse impact of global climate change.
Trees not only provide oxygen, but also have a potential role in protecting the natural biodiversity from disasters, they observed.
They were addressing the inaugural function of the divisional
tree plantation campaign and tree fair jointly organised by the divisional forest department and the district administration in front of the Sylhet Circuit House in the city in the afternoon.
The finance minister, Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, addressed the function as chief quest with local deputy commissioner Shahidul Islam in the chair.
Local lawmaker Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury and Syeda Jebunnessa Haque, Sylhet City Corporation former mayor Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran, acting mayor Mohammed Shahjahan, Sylhet District Council administrator Abduz Zahir Chowdhury, deputy inspector general of police Makbul Hussain Bhuiyan and divisional forest officer Abul Basher, among others, spoke the programme.
