The two-day birth anniversary celebrations programme organised marking 150thm birth anniversary of noted poet, playwright and lyricist Dwijendralal Roy ended on Saturday at the Bangladesh National Museum Auditorium.
Poet Abul Momen, Indian scholar Ranjan Mitra and Indian deputy high commissioner Sandip Chakraborty delivered speeches on Dwijendralal Roy on the concluding programme.Famous singers Iffat Ara Dewan, Aditi Mohsin, Swastika Mukhopadhyay presented DL Roy’s evergreen songs at the programme.
Bengal Foundation, in association of Kolkata based cultural organisation Sree- Arvindo Institute of Culture jointly organised the anniversary celebrations programme, which is observed on July 17.
Dwijendralal Roy (19 July 1863 – 17 May 1913), also known as DL Roy, is considered one of the top five poets in the Bangla literature. He was known for his myth and history based plays and a distinctive style as a lyricist and musician.
Earlier on Friday the birth anniversary celebrations programme was inaugurated by professor emeritus Anisuzzaman as chief guest.
Sree- Arvindo Institute Ranjan Mitra, secretary of Hare Krishna Mandir Trust Sankar Bandopadhyay, chairman of Bangal Foundation Abul Khayer and secretary of the ministry of Housing Dr Khandokar Sawkat Hossain were also present at the programme as special guests.
Ranjan Mitra in his memorial lecture analysed the nature of revolt by DL Roy against the British imperialism and compared it with that of Rabindranath Tagore, revolutionary Arvindo and DL Roy’s son poet Dilip Kumar Roy.
Professor Anisuzzaman discussed on the relation between Tagore and Dwijendralal Roy, who had good relation initially that turned into hostility as Roy used to criticise Tagore’s poetic style.
Sankar Bandopadhyay and Dr Khandokar Sawkat Hossain analysed DL Roy as an uncompromising character. They also focused on the sacrifices Roy made in his struggle against the British rulers.
Followed by the discussion, popular local and Indian singers like Laisa Ahmed Lisa and Luva Nahir Chowdhury and Swastika Mukhopadhyay presented DL Roy’s evergreen songs. Lisa first came onstage and presented Hridoyo nandono boney and Prabhu aji tomar in her melodious voice. Luva Nahid Chowdhury sang DL Roy’s songs such as Aji nutono ratoney, Rupey borney gondhe, E jagotey ami and Tumi badhiley ki diye. Swastika Mukhopadhyay presented Aji tomar kachhe asiachhi.
