Police rescue him with serious injuries
Criminals abducted a Mitford Hospital doctor after taking him out of his chamber in Old Dhaka on the pretence that they needed him to see a critical patient on Sunday.
They had demanded Tk 20 lakh in ransom for release of the doctor, Sunirmal Roy, an assistant professor of neonatology department at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitord Hospital.
However, in the early hours yesterday, police rescued Sunirmal and nabbed one of the two abductors.
Sunirmal, stabbed by the kidnappers, was now undertreatment at the Mitford Hospital.
According to police, hospital sources and relatives, two persons came to his private chamber near the hospital on Sunday afternoon and requested him to go with them to see a critical patient at Kadamtoli in Keraniganj on the other side of the Buriganga.
In the evening, his relatives received phone calls saying that the doctor was abducted. The callers demanded Tk 20 lakh in ransom.
The relatives immediately contacted the authorities of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitord Hospital, who informed police about the matter.
As advised by, relatives agreed to the abductors to pay the ransom. As arranged, one of the kidnappers came to a particular place at Azimpur to collect the money, police arrested him.
Contacted, director of the hospital Brig General AKM Fariduzzaman said Dr Sunirmal was in a state of mental shock, and unwilling to say anything about the incident now.
Asked, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali police station Salahuddin Khan said no case was lodged in this connection till 8:00pm yesterday. He however added a case would be recorded later.
