The fifth biennale of Bangladesh Documentary Festival will begin today at the main auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum.
Bangladesh Documentary Council has been organising the festival since 2004 with a view to promoting documentary making in the country.
The five-day festival titled Documenting Bangladesh 5, will screen a total of 32 documentaries, all of which revolve round Bangladesh, said Anwar Chowdhury, festival director, at a press conference on Thursday.
Poet-playwright Syed Shamsul Haque will inaugurate the festival today. At the inauguration programme, lifetime achievement award will be conferred on Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munier (both posthumously) for their contribution to documentary making.
Initially, around 80 documentaries by local and foreign makers were submitted to be screened at the festival, said the festival director. Among them, 32 have been selected for screening including four by foreign makers from India, Malaysia and Nepal.
The documentaries will be screened at the main auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum and Shawkat Osman auditorium of Public Library.
Besides the screening, a three-day workshop on documentary appreciation will be held at the seminar room of Public Library during the festival. Anyone interested in documentary making and appreciation can join the workshop for free, which will begin at 10am on Saturday.
A seminar has also been planned on Saturday at 3pm at the seminar room of Public Library. Mahmudul Hasan will present the keynote paper at the seminar titled New Media Art and Documentary.
The festival will end on April 1 with an award-giving ceremony where winners in two sections- national and beginner- will be awarded.
