Heavy rainfall in different parts of the country strained people’s life, with people of Chittagong and Sylhet facing severe water stagnation on Thursday.
The Met Office in Sylhet recorded 233.2mm of rainfall in 24 hours till Tuesday evening, the highest in the region in 42 years. The downpour continued till Thursday when the meteorologists recorded 78mm of rainfall.
The New Age correspondent in Chittagong said that most low-lying areas in the city such as Muradpur, Agrabad, Bakalia and Halishahar went under ankle-to-knee-high water because of the downpour that continued for three hours.
People, especially school- and office-goers suffered most because of the water that collected during the rain.
The Met Office at Patenga on Thursday recorded 88.2mm of rainfall and said that medium-to-heavy rainfall might occur over Chittagong and adjoining areas today. Ports in Cox’s Bazar have been asked to flag local cautionary signal 3, which means that ports are threatened by squally weather.
The correspondent in Sylhet said that residents had been facing severe water stagnation in different areas for three days.
Apart from city roads, low-lying areas at Kadamtali, Station Road, Bangabir Road, Baruthkhana, Munshipara, Kalighat and Sagardighirpar went under water after Tuesday’s rainfall.
Rainfall was recorded at 51.2mm in 24 hours still 6:00am Thursday and at 78mm between 6:00am and 6:00pm on the day, the Met Office said.
Assistant director at the Met Office Abu Syeed Chowdhury told New Age that 233.2mm of rainfall was recorded in 24 hours till Tuesday evening and it was the highest in the region in 42 years; 210mm of rainfall was earlier recorded on October 8, 1970.
A deep convection is taking place over the north Bay and adjoining coastal areas, private news agency United News of Bangladesh reported.
Ports in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to flag local cautionary signal 3.
All fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay have been advised to keep close to the shore and proceed with caution until further notice.
Moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely at places over Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, the Met Office said.
Hafizur Rahman, a meteorologist in the Met Office in Dhaka, described the rainfall as a normal phenomenon of the monsoon.
He said that they had recorded a rainfall 11mm in Dhaka, 45mm in Chuadanga, 30mm in Jessore, 30mm in Swandip and more than 30mm in Rangamati.
