Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman yesterday visited Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and rebuked the authorities for untold sufferings to patients due to mismanagement.
“A very strong syndicate of brokers is active under the authorities’ nose and the staffs are charging fees for some free services,” said Dr Rahman while talking to reporters after his visit.
At the emergency department, he found a patient lying on the floor. The officials of the department informed him that there was no bed vacant.
However, Dr Rahman found a bed unused at the emergency department’s courtyard. As he asked hospital staffs about it, they remained silent.
Talking to him, a patient alleged that hospital staffs demand extra money without receipts for issuing beds.
The HRC chairman also found the hospital staffs collect Tk 20 entry fee from attendants, while entry of journalists is prohibited at the hospital.
Moreover, he saw the hospital staff collecting Tk 20 as fee for carrying a patient on the trolley.
Hearing about his visit, RMCH Director Brig Gen Abdus Sabur Mia rushed to the scene. Dr Rahman expressed resentment before the RMCH director over the sorry state of the hospital.
Brig Gen Abdus Sabur informed the HRC chairman that he was new to the post and assured him of bringing in discipline within a short time.
