Parents filed 6 cases against addicted children within a month
The number of drug addicts has gone up in the Barisal city and its adjacent areas in the recent times.
Declining socio-cultural and moral values, slack family bond and increasing frustration arising out of intense life-struggle are attributed to this rising trend of addiction in the area, according to a network of non-governmental organisations.
The Barisal NGO Development Network officials, quoting information collected by member organisations, said more than two lakh people, mostly youths, have become addicted to different drugs.
They said there are at least 200 spots of drug peddling in the district, including 58 in the city.
The sale of drugs like Phensidyls, Ganja, foreign and local liquor, heroin, different types of pain killer and sedative injections, tablets and liquid adhesive known as ‘dandy’ is rampant from early morning to late into night in the city almost under the nose of the law enforcing agencies.
Drug peddling syndicates are so strong that, with the support of a section of local influentials, they killed a source of RAB at Kawnia last week, the sources said.
Besides, the drug peddlers, who are arrested by the law enforcing agencies at different times, can easily manage bails from the court, the sources added.
Meanwhile, six cases were lodged by parents within a month with an appeal the court to detain their addicted sons.
Court and police sources said a mother of Babuganj filed a case against his son on January 20 with the Barisal senior judicial magistrate court.
Among the other cases, one was lodged on January 11 by a mother of Hospital Road area of the city, another on January 3 by a mother of the Band Road area of the city, one on January 6 by a father of Charmonai with the chief judicial magistrate court.
The rest two cases were lodged by two mothers of Jordan Road and Palaspur areas of the city on December 21 and 29 with the same court.
The courts, after receiving the cases, issued warrant for arrest of the addicted youths but the police could not arrest any of them till this report.
