Drug trade and abuse has increased alarmingly at Rajshahi University as the campus turns into a den of drug addicts and peddlers availing the long summer vacation.
During the summer vacation, from April 28 to May 31, the drug lords, mainly outsiders from the adjacent areas, freely run their trade on the campus as there is hardly any restriction on the entrance of outsiders into the university campus.
Several places on campus including the premises of mass graveyard, fine arts department and Shabash Bangladesh Chhattar, Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall playground, Folklore Chattar, Zuberee Bhaban of the University playground go under the control of drug dealers after sunset, and they road the campus in broad daylight during the summer vacation.
Phensedyl, fermented liquor, heroin, ganja and rectified spirit are sold openly at these points and a large number of outsiders regularly come to take drug, witnesses said.
Every time the university goes into vacation, the lonely campus turns into a safe heaven for drug addicts while a huge number of the university students also join them, said a teacher seeking anonymity.
Incidents of mugging and extortion in the university area are also on the rise as a result of drug abuse on the campus, said an official of the university, Rokunuzzaman.
RU proctor Professor Tarikul Hasan has told New Age that they have started monitoring to stop drug abuse and its trade on the campus and urged the law enforcers to take stern action against drug peddlers.
