A section of teachers and students of female dormitories at Dhaka University on Wednesday staged demonstration protesting at the 13-point demand
placed recently by the Hefajat-e-Islam rally.
Rejecting the 13-point demand as ‘against freedom of thought’, they said the 13-point demand went against the rights of women in society.
Addressing the programme at Raju Memorial Sculpture, the university vice-chancellor, AAMS Arefin Siddique, said women’s contribution to the progress of society could never be denied.
‘But the Hefajat, in the name of religion, hinders women’s participation in society that would
potentially hold back the country’s progress,’ he viewed.
DU pro-vice-chancellor Nasrin Ahmad chaired the rally while Rokeya Hall provost Nazma Shaheen, Sajeda Banu of Shamsunnahar Hall, Gulshan Ara Latifa of Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, Farida Begum of Kuwait Moitri Hall, Nilufar Nahar of Sufia Kamal Hall, among others, spoke.
Later, they also brought out a procession that ended at the base of Aparajeya Bangla of the university.
