The Dhaka University authorities on Tuesday observed ‘Black Day’ commemorating repression on its teachers and students during the army-backed caretaker government in 2007.
Teachers, students, officials and employees of the university wore black badges marking the day. Classes at the university remained suspended from 11:00am to 1:00pm as part of observance of the day.
The university authorities organised a discussion at the Teacher-Student Centre auditorium where the speakers narrated their haunting experience of the
days.
The university vice-chancellor, AAMS Arefin Siddique, demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators of the campus violence.
‘Those who were involved in the incident should be punished. If they are kept out of trial, such incidents may recur,’ the DU VC, chairing the programme, said.
DU pro-vice-chancellor (academic) Prof Nasreen Ahmad and pro-VC (administration) Prof Shahid Akhter Hossain, among others, addressed the function.
Deans, provosts, syndicate members, teachers, students and officials of the university attended the discussion.
The DU observed 23 August as ‘Black Day’ commemorating the repression of teachers, students and staff members of the university by law enforcers from August 20 to 23 in 2007 on the campus.
This year, the university authorities decided to observe ‘Black Day’ on August 28 because of Eit-ul-Fitar vacation.
