DU resumes the classes on campus, RU reopens halls today

Dhaka University is set to resume in-person classes while Rajshahi University reopens the residential halls today after one-and-a-half years’ closure since March 18, 2020 due to the Covid outbreak in the country.
Dhaka University academic council on October 7 decided to resume in-person classes from October 17 as per the recommendation of the Provost Standing Committee.
According to the decision, if any department or any institution, want to continue online classes, they can hold 40 per cent of classes online but they must conduct 60 percent of all classes physically.
Almost 93 per cent of students already have been vaccinated, said DU ICT cell director Professor Md Asif Hossain Khan.
Earlier, authorities reopened the university’s central library, and the seminar-libraries of every department reopened on September 26.
Later on, university authorities reopened its residential hall for all years’ students on October 10 five days after they reopened them for bachelor final-year and Master’s students on October 5.
Rajshahi University public relations office administrator Professor Md Ajijur Rahman said that the students, who have taken at least one dose of Covid vaccine, will be allowed to enter their respective halls on production of their vaccination documents and identity cards from 10:00am today.
Earlier on September 30, the RU authorities decided to open the residential halls for students on October 17 and to resume in-person classes on October 20.
Professor Md Ajijur Rahman said that the students who have not yet taken the first dose of the Covid vaccine or registered for the vaccine will have to complete the registration processes and take the first dose of the vaccine before entering the halls and classrooms.
All students must get vaccinated by October 22, he said.
Professor Md Ajijur Rahman said that the authorities would launch a six-day Covid vaccination campaign at the Shaheed Sukharanjan Somaddar Teacher-Student Cultural Centre from October 17 to October 22 to expedite vaccination of its students and employees and to facilitate the resumption of in-person academic activities.
Meanwhile, the university received more than Tk 5 crore from the University Grants Commission for the renovation of residential halls before reopening university for ensuring a healthy and hygienic environment for the students.
However, the preparation has been limited merely to cleaning halls’ surroundings and common rooms, dining halls, canteens and reading rooms, and repainting the walls.
Some of the hall authorities were yet to complete the installation processes of hand washing basins at the entrances of the halls until filing of the report on Saturday evening.
He said, ‘The renovation works inside the halls require a big budget. The tender process in this connection is going on,’ he added.
