The Dhaka University Journalists’ Association, one of the oldest organisations of campus journalists in the country, observed its 37th founding anniversary with festivities and different programmes on Monday.
DU vice-chancellor professor Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the celebration programme by cutting a cake at the games room of the university’s Teacher-Student Centre in the morning.
Expressing best wishes to the organisation, DU VC said, ‘The impact of journalists is very significant as their work affects the policy-making stages of every organisation that is why journalists have to be careful and truthful in their activities.’
‘Some tiny mismanagements can be settled by providing information to the proper authorities without publishing any news, as some local news creates sensations when that information is being spread widely and general people interpret the news in the wrong way for not being able to understand the actual context,’ he added.
Thanking the vice-chancellor, DUJA president Mamun Tushar urged the members of the DUJA to be honest and accurate in producing news.
‘Objectivity shall be the top and main priority in producing news,’ he added.
The inauguration programme was conducted by DUJA general secretary Sirajul Islam Rubel.
DUJA members, director, and staff of TSC were present during the celebration programme.
A colourful procession was also organised on the occasion.
Besides, to mark the day, a friendly football match between the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association and the DUJA was held at the central playground of the university in the afternoon.
In the match, the DUJA football team suffered a 0-7 goal defeat against DUTA. A prize-giving ceremony was held after the football match.
DU pro-vice-chancellor professor ASM Maksud Kamal, DUTA general secretary Nijamul Haque Bhuiyan, senate member professor AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, and members of the DUTA, among others, were present during the prize-giving ceremony.
On this day in 1985, the organisation started its journey with just 13 members from different newspapers. The DUJA now has 39 members.
