The Election Commission on Wednesday started cautioning polls candidates against whom the electoral inquiry committee had found evidence of breach of code of conduct.
The commission in letters to the candidates concerned asked them to refrain from violating further the code of conduct and warned of actions if they continued to violate the code, commission sources said.
Besides, the commission also reminded the Jatiya Sangsad speaker, Jamiruddin Sirca, to avoid using the government car and other official facilities while on trip to his constituency for election campaigns.
Sircar, who is running for Panchagarh 1 constituency on Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s ticket, allegedly used the protocol he enjoys as the speaker of Jatiya Sangsad, in election campaigns.
When the attention of the chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda was drawn to a report that the speaker was using the protocol for election purposes in contravention of the electoral code of conduct, Huda said, ‘I talked to him requesting him to go by the code of conduct…It was a petty violation.’
The electoral inquiry committees earlier submitted reports to the commission with evidence of violation of the electoral code of conduct by 24 candidates running for the December 29 polls.
The committees, which investigated 27 specific allegations against contenders from major political parties, including Awami League, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Bikalpadhara Bangladesh and National Awami Party, submitted the reports to the Election Commission Monday for its consideration.
