Awami League (AL) Presidium Member and former Home Minister Mohammad Nasim on Friday called upon the Election Commission (EC) to propose a stringent law to stop use of religion in politics. “The Election Commission should play a strong role in stopping misuse of religion in politics. For this purpose, the EC should not keep mum,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion in the city. Swadhinata Shikhkhak Parishad organised the discussion on “Responsibilities of the teachers community to resist use of religion in politics” at Public Library auditorium in the capital.
Convener of the organisation Prof Abdul Mannan Chowdhury chaired the discussion, also addressed, among others, by member secretary Principal Md Shahjahan Alam Saju, Principal MA Awal Siddiqui, Principal Shahidul Islam Biswas and general secretary of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote Arun Sarker Rana.
Nasim said a tough measure should be taken against those who are using religion so that none could dare to do the same practice again. “Religion is for all. Time has come for the Election Commission to take a decision in this regard,” the senior Awami League leader added.
Pointing at his audience of teachers, Nasim, also the spokesman of the 14-party alliance, said, “For the faults of Awami League you should not put any force in the helm of the state affairs who would transform Bangladesh into a Taliban state like Afghanistan and snatch away freedom of the country’s womenfolk by adopting a fanatic policy.”
Turning to the Padma Bridge issue, the senior Awami League leader underscored the need for initiating immediately the construction work of the Bridge without any further delay. “The people will give their mandate in our favour if we can start construction work to complete the bridge during our next tenure,” Nasim added.
