The Election Commission (EC) is set to review the pleas of political parties for registration with the poll panel for taking part in the upcoming national elections.
“We are set to send the proposals to the commission for reviews of the pleas of the political parties as we observed that some parties committed silly mistakes while complying with the EC’s conditions,” a senior official of the EC told The Independent, preferring anonymity. The EC held a meeting in this connection yesterday, the official said.
Earlier, the EC did not register 40 out of 43 political parties as these did not fulfil the necessary conditions.
The commission will send letters to the 40 political parties to know what their clarifications are and their respective stands on the issue, the sources said.
According to Section 90(B) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), in order to register with the EC, a party must have a central committee, committees in at least 21 districts and 100 upazilas, each of which must have at least 200 members.
Political parties willing to take part in the parliamentary elections have to be registered with the Election Commission (EC).
“According to the Representation of the People (Amendment) Ordinance, 2008, and Representation of the People (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2008, in a rule there named Registration of Political Parties, 2008, conditions relating to registration have been laid down,” commissioner Mohammad Abdul Hafiz told The Independent. He said 43 new organisations have filed applications for registration as political parties.
