The Editors’ Council in a meeting on Sunday formed its new executive committee with The Daily Star editor and publisher Mahfuz Anam as the president and Bonik Barta editor and publisher Dewan Hanif Mahmud as the general secretary for a two-year term.
Among other office bearers, New Age editor Nurul Kabir and Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamal Dutta were made vice-presidents while Dhaka Tribune editor Zafar Sobhan was named assistant general secretary.
Manabzamin editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury was named treasurer of the new committee, according to a press release issued on Monday.
The five executive members are Ittefaq editor Tasmima Hossain, Ajker Patrika editor Md Golam Rahman, Jugantor editor Saiful Alam, Karatoa editor Md Mozzmel Hoque and Dainik Azadi editor MA Malek, said the release.
At the beginning of the council meeting, chaired by Mahfuz Anam at the Daily Star Bhaban, a one-minute silence was observed showing respect to its founding member Reazuddin Ahmed, who died on December 25, 2021.
The meeting approved the inclusion of Ajker Patrika editor Golam Rahman as a new member and former Samakal acting editor Mustafiz Shafi as an associate member of the organisation.

Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman performed the role of chief election commissioner in forming the new committee.
The council meeting scheduled for December 14 was postponed due to the illness of Reazuddin Ahmed, the release said.
Mahfuz Anam was also the president of the council’s previous committee while Hanif Mahmud had been working as the acting general secretary since August last year.
