Speakers at a meeting in the city on Friday underscored the need for imparting more knowledge to the new generation on climate change and its impact. Addressing a prize giving ceremony on Quiz Competition on Climate Change and Environment, they also underlined the need for building logic and science based society. Institute for Environment and Development (IED) organised the quiz competition at Dhaka Government Commercial Institute. Bhorer Kagoj editor Shamol Datta, who addressed the function as the chief guest, said the students should be more conscious about the impact of climate change. “Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Our children should acquire knowledge on climate change and its effect,” he added. He regretted that most of the children are lagging behind in the competition of knowledge.
IED executive director Numan Ahmed Khan said youths can play an important role to create awareness among the people about the impacts of climate change if they are imparted knowledge in the topic. St. Joseph Higher Secondary School became the champion while Maple Leaf International School runner up in the quiz competition.
Sadman Amin, a class seven student of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School has been selected as the best quizzer.
Later, the winners were given crests, medals, books and certificates. Students from eight leading schools in the city took part in the competition. Engr Md Abdus Sobhan, Dr Lelin Chowdhury, Khairul Alam Sabuj, Sanchita Talukder, Horendra Nath Singh and Sheikh Wahind Bakth, among others, were present on the occasion.
