The draft Education Act of the country proposed that Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan would be made a full-fledged sports university with the
establishment of schools and colleges of sports at district levels under the university.
At present the BKSP, located at Savar on the outskirts of the capital, the lone institution of sports education is conducting SSC and HSC programmes according to the current syllabus of Dhaka Education Board and degree course under the National University.
The regional branches of BKSP in Chittagong, Khulna, Barisal and Dinajpur offer education up to Class VIII.
The draft of the Education Act-2013 has been posted on the Education Ministry’s website on Wednesday. The law was drafted in line with the recommendations made by the National Education Policy 2010.
Sports schools’ education might not create any complication for the students to pursue higher education in the general stream and for that the subjects included in the uniform curricula at primary and secondary levels will be taught as compulsory subjects in the schools of sports too, the draft said.
For training of specialist physical education teachers, necessary physical education colleges will be established, the draft said.
Scope for appointing a male and a female sports teacher at the all primary and secondary schools will
be created, it added.
The National Education Policy 2010 said that sports education must be given an important place in our national education system and it is necessary to take practical steps.
The policy says the aims and objectives of sports education are to encourage the students to take part in sports, to provide facilities so that the boys and girls throughout the country can get equal opportunities to contribute in the field of sports and to inspire the students to take up games as a profession.
BKSP was established in 1986 with the objective of developing sports in Bangladesh and it admits students in different areas of sports such as athletics, basketball, cricket, football, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, shooting and tennis.
BKSP has produced many renowned national cricketers, footballers, hockey players, shooters and in other disciplines.
