Eid-ul-Azha, the second biggest religious festival of the Muslims, commemorating the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim, will be celebrated on Wednesday.
The celebrations will begin with Eid congregations across the country followed by sacrifice of animals in the name of Allah.
Thousands of people have already left the capital and other major cities for their home towns and villages to celebrate Eid with their families.
Bus and launch terminals and railway stations were overcrowded by people heading home.
A three-day government holiday begins today. Newspaper offices will also remain closed for three days. The state-run BTV and private television channels will air special programmes on the occasion. The authorities asked police and other law enforcers to remain alert, with instructions to reinforce deployment at all major sites of Eid congregation.
The national flag will be hoisted atop government and non-government buildings. Roads and intersections would be decorated with the national flags and banners and festoons reading ‘Eid Mubarak.’ Besides, all major architectural sites would be illuminated.
The president, Zillur Rahman, the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the opposition, Khaleda Zia, BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president ASM Abdur Rab, Bangladesh Christian Association president Pramad Mankin and political leaders have issued separate messages on the occasion and conveyed their Eid greetings to the people.
In capital Dhaka, the main Eid congregation will be held at the National Eidgah at 8:00am where the president Zullur Rahman will say his Eid prayers.
He will also host a reception at Bangabhaban on the Eid day to exchange pleasantries with dignitaries and foreign diplomats.
Five congregations will be held at the national mosque, Baitul Mukarram, at 7:00am, 8:00am, 9:00am, 10:00am, and 10:45am on the Eid day.
The biggest congregation will, however, be held at Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj. This will be the 182th Eid congregation at the place.
In Dhaka, two congregations will be held Dhaka University mosque at 8:00am and 9:00am. Congregations will also be held at Salimullah Hall mosque and at Shahidullah Hall lawn at 8:00am.
