After throwing the internet into a frenzy with a post hours earlier, billionaire Elon Musk said, he has no aspirations to purchase the football team Manchester United.
“No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams,” Musk replied early on Wednesday when asked by a Twitter user whether he was serious about taking over the floundering English football team.
“Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav (sic) team as a kid,” he added.
The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, initially tweeted, “I’m buying Manchester United ur (sic) welcome.”
Musk’s first tweet about the club garnered more than 500,000 ‘likes’ on the platform in a matter of hours.
Given his history of making unclear and strange pronouncements on the social media platform, Musk’s comments were generally met with skepticism.
He undoubtedly provided United supporters who were discouraged by the team’s dismal performances and declining fortunes with some measure of hope, though.
The Glazers, an American business family that presently owns United, have come under fire from fans, who are calling for them to leave the team.
Tesla’s founder withdrew the $44 billion agreement last month, causing Twitter to file a lawsuit. Hearings are scheduled to start in October.
