The government will soon start implementing the Private University Act involving all stakeholders, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said yesterday.
“We have passed the law after holding talks with private university association for one year, so that they [private universities] can run their institutions successfully,” the minister said.
He also said though the private universities are making valuable contribution to the country’s higher education, many of them are yet to achieve any success in ensuring quality of education.
Nahid made the remark at a programme organised by the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) to mark its sixth founding anniversary.
Questions have been raised regarding rented campus, lack of educational atmosphere and standard of education in many private universities, he said.
“The authorities of these unsuccessful universities could not meet the requisites, which they promised during the launching of their universities,” the minister said.
Nahid alleged that the students, who got admitted to these universities by spending huge amount of money, are affected as they failed to get proper education in a congenial educational atmosphere.
“It can’t be acceptable. We will not let education turn into a tool of business,” said the minister.
Thanking the ULAB authorities for launching their own campus, Nahid urged the authorities concerned of all universities to play a more responsible role by giving quality education as well as ensuring standard of their universities.
ULAB founder Kazi Shahid Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor Prof Rafiqul Islam spoke on the occasion among others.
