Party chairman HM Ershad blamed the AL for violation of seat sharing treaty with JP in the election. He called the Awami League candidates in Rangpur-4 and Rangpur-5 to stop campaign for them in the greater interest of grand alliance.
“There is no alternative of election symbol ‘plough’ in Rangpur,” said Ershad asking AL candidates in these constituencies to retire from election campaign. Ershad claimed that AL had given its candidates in 12 constituencies, including Rangpur-4 and Rangpur-5. Though AL agreed to withdraw its candidates from these constituencies, no development is observed as yet, he added.
Jatiya Party chairman on Tuesday addressed at least 20 wayside meetings at different places under Rangpur-4 (Kounia-Pirgachha) and Rangpur-5 constituency (Mithapukur).
Awami League leader Tipu Munshi is contesting with the symbol of ‘boat’ against JP’s former MP Karim Uddin Bharsha with the symbol of ‘plough’ in Rangpur-4 constituency.
Again AL candidate and former state Minister HN Ashiqur Rahman with the symbol of boat is contesting against JP candidate SM Foqur-uz-Zaman with the symbol of plough in Rangpur-5 constituency.
At every meeting, Ershad, however, mentioned that Karim Bharsha and Foqur-uz-Zaman are the real grand alliance candidates in these constituencies. He also blamed the AL for breach of seat sharing treaty with JP.
He said, AL has given its candidate in 12 more across the country breaking the treaty. He takes Sheikh Hasina for his younger sister. So she should behave with him as should be done.
“We scarified many things for the grand alliance. We were given only 46 seats. We think that we should get full supports from AL in these seats. But we did not. He lamented that
we formed the grand alliance to fight against BNP in the election, and no to contest between boat and plough.
Ershad at Payerabond under Mithapukur upazila said, Rangpur region had been neglected out of jealousy and deprived of major development programmes for the last 15 years, as it was the vote bank of JP.
There, he committed if the grand alliance was voted to power, Rangpur will be upgraded as a division comprising of eight northern districts, would build gas supply network and eradicate monga permanently.
At Mithapukur, the former president of the republic said, “JP wants the country to be divided in eight provinces but we have supported AL in regard to Rangpur division.”
