The prices of some essential commodities remained volatile on the capital’s kitchen markets over the week ending Friday because of the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha on Wednesday.
The prices of onion, green chilli and some spices shot up ahead of Eid. The prices, however, came down on Friday as the demand decreased, said retailers.The retailers said the demand for most of the items rose ahead of Eid which pushed up their prices but the prices came down on Friday as the demand declined.
‘The high demand ahead of Eid pushed up the prices which declined again as most of the home goers are yet to return to the city,’ Abdur Rahim, a retail businessman on city’s Malibag kitchen market, told New Age on Friday.
Most of the kitchen markets witnessed very few customers as the city people, who left Dhaka for their village homes to celebrate the holidays, are yet to return to the capital after the Eid vacation.
Onion price rose by Tk 20 a kilogram in the previous week which rose further this week selling at Tk 110-115 a kg on the retail market while the imported onion was retailing at Tk 90-Tk 95 a kg.
The price of green chilli almost shot up to in the last week selling at Tk 180-Tk 200 a kg ahead of Eid but came down to Tk 140 on Friday.
Prices of the vegetables remain unchanged from precious week. Aubergine was selling at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg, okra at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 60 a kg, papaya at Tk 20 a kg and bean at Tk 80 a kg on Friday.
The prices of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) rose by Tk 5-Tk 10 selling at Tk 575-Tk 590 on Friday. The price of unpacked soya bean oil remained unchanged, retailing at Tk 115 a kg over the week.
The price of garlic dropped by Tk 10-Tk 20 a kg selling at Tk 70 on Friday which was Tk 80-Tk 90 before Eid.
Ginger price dropped by Tk 20 a kg selling at Tk 120 a kg on Friday.
Red lentil, imported and local, were selling between Tk 80-Tk 100 a kg on different kitchen markets of the city.
The price of egg remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 32 a hali (four pieces).
The price of potato remained stable and the item was selling at Tk 18 a kg on Friday.
Rice prices remained steady. Fine varieties of miniket and najirshail were selling at Tk 46-Tk 48 a kg and Tk 52-Tk 54 a kg respectively, BR-28 at between Tk 40 and Tk 45 a kg and coarse varieties at Tk 34 a kg on the city’s retail markets on Friday.
Fish prices remained stable on the retail markets but their demand was low because of Eid, said the retailers.
Rohita was selling at Tk 250-Tk 300 a kg on Friday, pangas at Tk 180-Tk 250 a kg and tilapia at Tk 160-Tk 200 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The price of broiler remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 125-Tk 130 a kg over the week.
