Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Elmar Brok has reminded that the European companies purchasing readymade garments from Bangladesh must share the responsibilities, and exercise control and promote acceptable standards in factories.
He made the remarks during a meeting with foreign minister Dipu Moni, now in Brussels to have talks with officials to retain DFQF facility for Bangladeshi products in the EU market.
The AFET chair reiterated that he wished to see the government of Bangladesh implementing measures in the readymade garment industry, which would ensure concrete improvements in workplace safety and labour rights.
The web release on the European Parliament website said the Committee on
Foreign Affairs had an exchange of views with Dipu Moni but did not mention the date.
The European Union and Bangladesh on Tuesday urged the foreign buyers, particularly the European companies, to remain engaged in and work with both the EU and Bangladesh to support and promote socially responsible supply chains.
Dipu Moni and EU trade commissioner Karel De Gucht made the call in a joint statement issued in Brussels.
