Week-long European Film Festival kicked off at Star Cineplex of Bashundhara City in the capital on Tuesday evening.
European Union and Star Cineplex have jointly organised the second edition of the festival like they did in the previous year. The festival features 12 films from 12 different countries of the European Union.
The festival began with screening of Almanya, a German film directed by Yasemin Samdereli, at 7:15pm in the evening.
Almanya was premiered at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival and won the Deutscher Filmpreis 2011 in the Best Script and Best Film categories. The film tells the story of a Turkish family living in Germany for three generations. The story progresses as the family decides to visit their homeland for the very first time.
Yasemin Samdereli was present at the screening and also inaugurated the festival in presence of distinguished guests William Hanna, Ambassador of the European Union to Dhaka and Mahbubur Rahman, chairman of Star Cineplex.
Internationally-acclaimed films A Hijacking from Denmark, All The Glitters from France, The Selfish Giant from the UK, Lose Canons from Italy, The Blitz from Netherlands, 99% Honest from Norway, The Near East from Spain, Palme from Sweden, Recycling Lily from Switzerland, White Palms from Hungary and You Kiss Like A God from Czech Republic will be screened at the festival that will conclude on May 20.
