Former general secretary of the Bangladesh Cricket Board Aminul Huq Moni breathed his last on Sunday night at United Hospital in Dhaka. He was 66. He was put on a life support at city’s United Hospital since he suffered a massive heart-attack on April 8 after he had been ill for the last two years. He was buried at the Azimpur graveyard after a couple of namaz-e-janaja at the Tikatuli Mosque and Mohammedan Sporting Club arena on Monday.
A confirmed bachelor, Moni, was regarded as one of the chief architects of Bangladesh’s success in the pre-Test arena while serving the Bangladesh Cricket Board as its general secretary from 1991 to 1996.
He played a key role in inspiring Bangladesh to success in the 1997 ICC trophy, a defining moment in country’s cricket.
After Bangladesh failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1994, he deiced to hold the next two Dhaka Premier League tournaments on synthetic pitches, which was to be used in the next tournament in Malaysia.
Bangladesh reaped the reward and won the tournament to subsequently elevate them as a Test nation.
During his last involvement with the Board from 2009 to 2012, he had held the position of the Chairman of the BCB’s Game Development Committee.
BCB, Bangladesh Football Federation, Bangladesh Chess Federation, Bangladesh Women Sports Federation, Mohammedan Sporting Club and many others expressed their condolence at the death of Moni.
