Former national cricketer and member of Bangladesh’s first ICC Trophy squad in 1979 Ziaul Islam Masud died at the Anwar Khan Medical College Hospital in Dhaka on Saturday. He was 63. A lethal pace bowler in his playing days, Masud was working as a national umpire and trainer of umpires for the last few years. In a distinguished career Masud was also a national athlete and arguably the quickest bowler in local cricket during the 70s and early 80s.
He made a name for himself by playing for Wanderers Club, Azad Boys Club and Mohammedan Sporting Club in Dhaka’s league cricket.
He left behind his wife, two sons and many well-wishers to mourn his death.
The namaz-e-janaza of Masud will be held at the Wari mosque and the Bangabandhu National Stadium today after the Zuhr prayers. He will be buried at Azimpur graveyard.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board, Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association expressed their deep condolence at the sudden death of Masud.
