Kites of diverse colours and forms from different Asian countries are being displayed at the National Art Plaza of Bangladeshi Shilpakala Academy.
Titled Asian Kite Exhibition, the show features 150 kites of 14 Asian countries where kite flying is a popular game. The countries are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Bhutan, Singapore, Nepal and UAE.The Bangladeshi kites vary in shapes and names, including the chokhdar, maaldar, chataidar, paandar, pankhiraj, and gayra. Colourful papers, innovative designs and decorations on the surface of the kites made them especially appealing.
One of the kites has green borders with a red circle at the centre, resembling the country’s national flag, while small decorative papers designed as flowers, leaves and other forms dominated other kites.
Kites of other nations are mostly dominated by figures. There are animal figures such as bat, snake, peacock, cat, butterfly, bee and owl, and forms such as star and airplane – made with multihued papers.
Organised jointly by Dhakabasi Sangathan and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the four-day show was inaugurated on July 1 by Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of BSA. Among others, M Shukur Saleq, president of Bangladesh Kite Federation, was present on the occasion.
The show will remain open until 4pm today.
