Ten young talented artists have displayed their artistic creativity through their artworks at an exhibition taking place at the
Bengal Shilpalaya at Dhanmondi in the capital.
The exhibition is part of the art competition titled Aminul Islam Young Artist 2013 organsied by Bengal Foundation celebrating the 82nd birth anniversary of late eminent artist Aminul Islam.32 artworks by the 10 selected artists from the competition participators are on display at the exhibition. The artworks include paintings drawn in different mediums like watercolour, oil, acrylic, along with other forms of art like video installation and sculptures.
The artworks of the two winner artists – Habiba Akter Papiya’s two sculptures and Anisuzzaman Sohel’s pen and acrylic on paper paintings – are on display at the exhibition. The exhibition also displays the artworks of eight other artists including Abdullah Al Basir, Ashraful Hasan, Biswajit Goswami, Farzana Ahmed Urmi, Gopal Chandra Saha, Md Alomgir Hassan, Ruhul Karim Rumee and Sahid Kazi.
Papiya’s award winning bronze sculptures Effigy of Time and Lyrical Death make people think about the transience of life. Effigy of Time is a golden bronze sculpture shaped like a hollow bottle with a surface that resembles intertwining branches of a tree. However, the sculpture creates a melancholic sense in the mind of the visitors by symbolically presenting the transience of life though some large holes that represent the decaying power of time.
The sculpture Lyrical Death is also a skeletal bottle with inscriptions in Bangla and English verses. On the upper portion of the sculpture is a small figure of a man on his knees who is about to jump out of the bottle creates a thrilling sense for the viewers.
The other winner of the competition Anisuzzaman Sohel’s painting Neural Correlate is a collection of 6 separate images that juxtaposes images of human hands and legs with images of sharp weapons and equipments like traps, knives, scissors that are considered injurious for people.
Another of Sohel’s surrealistic painting Keep Screaming-1 portrays several screaming human figures drawn on top of the other. The common characteristic in Sohel’s paintings is the luminous blue outlines drawn on black background that resemble x-ray images. Thus the paintings have a much greater affect on the visitor’s minds than the general colourful artworks.
Inaugurated on November 07, the exhibition will remain open for everyone from 12:00 to 8:00pm till November 18.
